In a country where the game is considered to be a religion, the Indian Premier League is a mega event held every year. The tournament is a cash cow for the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It is a tournament in which the top crickets stars from India and abroad compete in a city based franchisee system. A total of 9 teams will participate in the 5th edition of the tournament which will start on the 4th of April 2012 at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The opening ceremony will take place on the 3rd of April a day prior to the commencement of the games. The tournament will feature 9 city based teams contesting a total of 74 matches between them over a period of 54 days. The tournament is played in a league plus knockouts format and each team will play the other twice in the league. IPL was valued at $ 3.87 Billion at the end of its fourth season.
The exact schedule of the Indian Premier League will be announced towards the end of the year 2011. The window for the tournament however has been decided as 4th April to 27th of May. The Chennai Superkings, a team from the city of Chennai are the defending champions, the first match and the final will be played at their home ground. The Superkings have won the IPL twice in two years and are a strong unit.
The tournament has been hugely successful in the past and 2012 is expected to be no different. The expulsion of the Kochi franchise has made this tournament a 9 team affair and the players from the Kochi team are to be auctioned on the 4th of February 2012 to the remaining franchises.
